The U.S. Department of State's Critical Language Scholarships provide funding for intensive overseas study of "critical need" languages, including Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu. Scholarships provide funding for students to participate in beginning, intermediate and/or advanced level summer language programs. Economic Research Analyst Position with the ANTITRUST DIVISION
The
Economic Analysis Group in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of
Justice has openings for full-time economic research analysts in Washington,
DC. The Economic Analysis Group has
approximately 50 economists who provide economic analysis for antitrust cases
brought by the Division. The primary
focus of our work is applied microeconomics, with an emphasis on competitive
interactions between firms in specific markets.
Research analysts work closely with staff economists to define relevant
product and geographic markets, determine pricing patterns, provide statistical
analysis of industry behavior, find trends in large datasets, and prepare
materials (such as maps, data, charts, and graphs) that may be required for
litigation. Duties may also include
assisting staff economists working on articles for publication in economic
journals.
The
Economic Analysis Group is looking for detail-oriented highly motivated
individuals interested in economics or math who have recently graduated or
expect to graduate soon (by August 2012).
This position qualifies for a Civil Service rating of GS-7 (annual pay
currently $42,209). A grade point
average of 3.0 or better is required, and you must be a U.S. citizen. Experience in working with spreadsheets,
statistics, computer programming, and econometrics is useful. Course work in statistics, econometrics,
calculus, and linear algebra is also useful. A formal application process
through the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) will be required.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC is seeking undergraduate and graduate students for internships in the Division of Risk, Strategy, and Financial Innovation (RSFI). RSFI integrates financial economics and data analytics to the core mission of the SEC. In doing so, RSFI is involved in the entire range of SEC activities, including policy-making, rule-making, enforcement and examination.
RSFI is offering unpaid training opportunities to undergraduate/graduate students in the Washington, DC area. Qualified students will be studying economics, finance, or a related quantitative field (mathematics, statistics); have experience analyzing data using Excel, SAS, Matlab, or Stata; be knowledgeable about securities and derivative products, and understand how financial markets operate. Alternatively, previous consulting experience and expertise in process mapping is desired.
The internship introduces qualified students to the regulation of securities markets and the work of the Commission. Positions are available in the following offices within RSFI: Office of Investments and Intermediaries, Office of Markets, Office of Litigation Support, Office of Corporate Finance, Office of the Managing Executive, and Office of the Deputy Director.
Selection Criteria: The SEC considers your entire background when it evaluates applications.
